Widows Come Alive in 2005!

“WHAT DO I DO NOW?”

This is the question asked by numerous widows when they suddenly find themselves having to make the adjustment to living alone without their spouses. This was the question asked by Ministers Mary Edwards and Dessie Morgan earlier this year. And the answers didn’t come easy. Prior to losing their husbands, these two widows had worked together in Joy of Jesus Ministries helping others put their lives together. Now they were forced with the challenge of having to do the same thing for themselves.

In March 2004, Morgan lost her spouse Fred after an on-again-off-again battle with cancer. Married for 36 years, the loss was devastating. She had married Fred at the age of 16.

The same month Minister Morgan’s husband passed, Minister Edwards’ husband, Rev. Eddie K. Edwards, was diagnosed with cancer as well. In July 2004 he passed. While Morgan was able to share what knowledge she had gained about “What to do next,” every widow’s situation is unique in itself. Thus, the issues were different and problem solving was often a challenge for Edwards.

Edwards says, “Prior to my husband’s death, I had never even opened a bill, let alone paid one. Then there were the insurance issues, social security matters to handle, the estate, and having to deal with people around you who were acting crazy when you needed them to be normal.” Those were major challenges that required sound decision making right in the middle of dealing with her grief and what to do next.

“But then there were the added everyday responsibilities,” Edwards continued, “such as where’s the fuse boxes? Who can I get to put in the storm widows? And having to remember to put the garbage at the curb every Thursday morning.”

Accustomed to being problem solvers, Edwards and Morgan have started a ministry called Widows With Wisdom (WWW). The goals for this invaluable ministry are to:

  • Hold monthly support meetings
  • Establish chapters in other cities
  • Host conferences throughout the USA
  • Publish a Widows With Wisdom Handbook, newsletters, and other books
  • Author a weekly column for widows via the internet
  • Create a phone hot line
  • Found a radio outreach ministry
  • Provide referrals for spiritual, financial and/or legal counseling
  • Encourage entrepreneurial opportunities

On Friday December 31, 2004 at 7:00 p.m., Widows With Wisdom launched their weekly program over Radio Station WLQV 1500 on the dial. Each week a different topic will be discussed. Edwards and Morgan stand on the scripture in James 1:27 which says, “Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is to visit orphans and widows in their trouble and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.” These two widows say, “We love our husbands but they are gone and we are still here to fulfill our destinies.
