FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE August 9, 2006 NEW RESOURCE GUIDE FOR WIDOWS PUBLICATION TO BE A WIN-WIN FOR ALL DETROIT – WIDOWS. Where are they? Everywhere! In your neighborhood. On your job. In your church. In your school. In your social club. In your family. Maybe it’s closer than that. It could be you. Did you know that there are 11 million widows in the United States alone? Reports also say that they are the most underserved population in America. Now, that’s sad. It’s sad because the Bible tells us that “Pure religion is to take care of the widows and the orphans…”(James 1:27). But here’s the good news. The widows are being served in Detroit through Minister Mary Edwards’ ministry and a new handbook designed to help widows deal with their losses. Many times when a woman becomes a widow she doesn’t know what to do next. Minister Mary Edwards, widow of Rev. Eddie K. Edwards, founder of Joy of Jesus Ministries in the city of Detroit, didn’t know what to do next. So she prayed and God led her to start a ministry for widows such as herself. These are widows who must learn how to live alone without their spouses and to make major decisions. Shortly after Rev. Edwards passed, Minister Edwards called together a group of widows and formed a support group called “Widows With Wisdom.” The purpose of the group is to educate, encourage, and embrace widows, thereby enhancing their quality of life. They do this by holding monthly support group meetings and recruiting speakers to come in and inform the group about legal, financial, business, and spiritual matters. Since their inception in August 2004, over 60 widows have attended their meetings. The meetings are upbeat and informative. Already they are being asked to replicate in other cities and in Canada. On Friday, August 18, WWW will host a “Get Acquainted” party for widows and sponsors. At this event, they will distribute their very first Widows With Wisdom Resource Handbook. The handbook will contain: 1) Information telling women what to do when they become widows; 2) Personal testimonies about how God has comforted and protected them even in the midst of their bereavement, and 3) Resources that can be safely used when needed such as plumbers, electricians, painters, financial advisors, lawyers, etc. There will be 2,000 copies of this handy guide printed. They will be distributed free of charge to churches, funeral homes, cemeteries, shopping malls, beauty salons, gas stations, and other places where women frequent. You are invited to come out and meet Widows With Wisdom on Friday, August18th, from 4:00-7:00 p.m. The meeting will be held at the Salvation Army Headquarters, 16130 Northland Drive in Southfield, Michigan. The building is located across from the Northland Mall and next door to Bally’s. There is plenty of free parking. Minister Mary Edwards will be addressing the crowd at 5:30 and sharing the vision for the ministry. To RSVP, and for more information, you may reach them in their Southfield office: (248) 663-2363.
